Take Three is an offline field journal for the edge of the road. Three frames, one object, kept on your iPhone. This page says what stays on the device, what may leave it for attribution and notifications, and how to reach us.
1. Who we are
This Privacy Policy applies to the mobile application Take Three (the “App”), published by Julien Gagnon (“we”, “us”). It covers the journal, hauls, atlas, tally, the Cabin spotting game, and the optional tracking and notification prompts.
2. Short version
- The journal works offline. Your takes are not uploaded to our servers.
- Photographs, notes, hauls, and Cabin scores stay on your device.
- We do not create accounts, sell data, or show ads.
- Tracking is optional. If you allow it, an advertising identifier may be shared so we can tell which visit led you to the App.
- Notifications are optional. A push token is used to deliver a message. Your takes are not included.
- The camera, photo library, and location are used only when you choose them for a frame or a map pin.
- Calendar access is write-only and only when you add a haul yourself. Other events are not read.
3. Camera, photos, location, and calendar
The App asks for permission only for the features you turn on:
- Camera — to photograph the Wide, Object, and Detail frames of a take.
- Photo library — when you pick an existing picture for a frame. We do not scan the rest of your library.
- Location, while in use — optional. If you drop a pin, the coordinate is saved with that take so you can see it on your map later. You can keep a take with no location.
- Calendar, write only — if you add a haul to the calendar, the App creates one event from that haul’s start to its end. A pin on a take in that haul can be attached as the place. The App does not read, edit, or upload your other events.
Those permissions are controlled by iOS. You can deny them and still use the journal without a new photo or pin.
4. What is stored on your device
To keep the journal, the App stores data locally (on-device storage and image files in the App’s private folder). This may include:
- Takes: species, note, marker, mood, weather, time of day, favorite flag, and the three frames
- The picture files you captured or chose
- Optional latitude and longitude for a pin
- Hauls (trips), including title and whether a haul is a night haul
- Cabin game scores and which types you missed
- Settings such as miles or kilometers, and whether you finished the introduction
- A saved page address, if a launch check returns one, and cookies for the in-app browser
- Sample shoulder cards shipped with the first launch, until you clear them
We do not operate a player database for this App. We cannot see your journal, restore it on another phone, or combine it with other people’s data.
5. Why that local data is used
On-device storage is used only to:
- Show your takes, atlas counts, map pins, and tally
- Keep an open haul so new takes sit on that road
- Remember Cabin scores
- Apply the units and introduction state you already chose
Where a privacy law asks for a legal basis, this processing is necessary to provide the journal you asked for, and it stays under your control on the device.
6. Export
If you tap Export journal, the App prepares a text summary and hands it to the iOS share sheet. Whatever you send after that (Messages, Mail, Files, and so on) is your choice and is handled by that other app, not by a server we run.
7. Network, tracking, and notifications
Collecting takes does not require an internet connection. The map tiles for pins you already saved may be requested from Apple’s map service when you open the map. Your journal is not sent with that request.
On launch the App may ask for permission to track, and for permission to send notifications. You can decline either one and still use the journal.
If you allow tracking, the App may read Apple’s advertising identifier (IDFA). If you decline, that identifier is not read. A separate vendor identifier and an AppsFlyer identifier can still be created on the device.
AppsFlyer measures installs and which visit led to the App. It may receive the AppsFlyer identifier, the bundle id, device model, system version, app version, the vendor identifier, your tracking choice, and the advertising identifier only when tracking is allowed. Those events go to AppsFlyer.
Notifications use the OneSignal software and are delivered through omesignal.com, plus Apple Push Notification service. If you allow notifications, that service may receive a push token, a user id, and the AppsFlyer identifier. It does not receive your takes.
The App may also request this website and send the bundle id, the AppsFlyer identifier, preferred language, time zone, a short description of the device, and either the advertising identifier or a blank id when tracking is off. If the reply contains a web address, the App opens it in the same in-app browser as this policy and remembers that address on the device. The journal is not part of the request.
Pages opened in that browser, including this policy, may set cookies. The App stores those cookies on the device and restores them the next time the browser opens. The Close control uses a local loopback link (http://localhost) so the App can dismiss the browser. It does not send your journal anywhere.
Loading this page may leave ordinary technical logs on the web host (for example IP address, browser type, and time of the request). Those logs are used to operate the website. This page has no advertising pixels.
8. Information we do not collect
- An account, name, or email through the App itself
- Contacts, microphone, or Health data
- Your existing calendar events. A haul is written only when you tap Add to calendar
- Payment card or Apple ID billing details (the App has no in-app purchases)
9. Apple and your device
Apple may process information under Apple’s own policies when you download the App, use iOS, or contact Apple Support. If you back up your iPhone, the local Take Three journal may be included in that backup under Apple’s terms. That backup is controlled by you and Apple, not by an account we run.
10. Children
Take Three is a general-audience field journal. It is not directed at children under 13 (or under 16 where that is the relevant age). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has emailed us personal data, contact us and we will delete that message.
11. Your choices
- Skip a pin — save a take without location.
- Leave a haul off the calendar — nothing is written unless you tap Add to calendar on that haul.
- Miles or kilometers — switch the marker field in Settings. The choice stays on the device.
- Clear sample data — removes the sketched sample takes and leaves what you photographed.
- Clear my takes — removes your photographs, hauls, and Cabin scores. Samples stay.
- Decline tracking — the advertising identifier is not read. You can change this later in iOS Settings, under Privacy & Security, then Tracking.
- Decline notifications — no push token is required to keep the journal. You can change this in iOS Settings for Take Three.
- Delete the App — uninstalling Take Three removes its local data from that device, including a saved page address and in-app browser cookies.
12. Sharing and third parties
We do not sell your information. We do not share the journal with advertisers, data brokers, or social networks. Attribution and notification partners, described above, receive only the identifiers needed for those features. They do not receive your takes, notes, or photographs.
If the law requires it, or we must protect rights and safety, we may disclose information that you send us by email.
13. Changes
We may update this Privacy Policy if the App or the law changes. The date at the top will change. The current version is the page published at this address.
